Orlando, Florida
Inspired after reading about Phil Knight’s travels in Shoe Dog and by colleagues at AppSumo who work remotely from various parts of the world, I’ve decided to move out of Austin and travel extensively while working. This blog will be a way for me to document places I visit and hopefully pay forward the inspiration to any adventurous souls who come across these posts. I’m currently celebrating my birthday in Orlando, Florida, and figure this will be as sufficient a place as any to start writing.
I’m grateful for people around me who care enough to take me on a fun birthday trip. We’re staying at the Hilton Orlando, a wonderful four-star resort, and have been able to visit family in the area in addition to celebrating my birthday. My grandfather (we call him Grandpop) lives in Orlando and has spent much of his adult life here. He’s almost 90, healthy and sharp, and a joy to be around. My grandmother (we called her Nani) spent much of her adult life in nearby Merritt Island. After she passed away in 2015, her ashes were memorialized into reef balls (artificial structures that help restore natural reef systems) by the charity Eternal Reefs. With family and some of her friends, we placed one of the leftover reef balls in the creek outside her condo.
A birthday is a great time to celebrate, reflect on the past, and think about the future. My goals for the next year are to work remotely in many places, maintain this blog, work on my business, continue to build my career at AppSumo, and continue down the path I’m on. I’m thankful for the days I’ve had and looking forward to everything ahead.
